What each RIP is, honestly
AcroRIP — the budget workhorse that came in the box
The default RIP of the budget DTF world: a one-off price around $375 for V11 (acrorip.com, 07/2026), dongle-licensed, and very often bundled with imported DTF printers — for many shops the question isn’t “should I buy AcroRIP” but “it’s what I have”. It prints white-over-colour DTF competently. Layout is not the point of it: expect manual placement and duplication rather than optimisation. CADlink Digital Factory v12 — the strongest built-in gang sheet tools
The one RIP whose DTF edition genuinely markets sheet building as a feature, and the upgrade dealers most often point DTF shops to (dtfsuperstore.com, kingdomdtf.com, 07/2026). Editions are tied to printer width — Desktop up to 17″, Wide from 24″ — and it is Windows-only. CADlink is the right call if you want layout, white generation and printing in one licensed tool on one Windows station and your volume fits one printer width tier. Kothari Print Pro — colour depth for a specific printer
A pro RIP sold per printer model, with a reputation built on colour management rather than layout. Dealer pricing runs ≈$1,200 list with offers around $840, DTF colour profiles are a paid add-on, and there’s a 15-day trial (aaprintsupplyco.com, 07/2026). Kothari is the right call if your bottleneck is colour accuracy and profiling on a specific machine, not sheet throughput — layout there is a side feature, not the product.
SAi Flexi — design and RIP in one subscription
Flexi comes from the sign-making world and sells as a design-plus-RIP suite with nesting and batching among its features, on subscription: from $37.99/month, $464.99 for a year, $1,394.99 for three (itsupplies.com, uscutter.com, 07/2026). Flexi is the right call if you actually design in it — one tool from artwork to print has real appeal for a solo operator. If you only need the RIP half, you are subscribing to a studio to use its printer driver. Mimaki RasterLink7 — free with the printer, basic on purpose
RasterLink7 comes bundled with Mimaki’s TxF DTF printers at no separate price (mimaki.com, hybridservices.co.uk, 07/2026). It drives the hardware it was built for reliably, and its white handling runs through Mimaki’s special-colour plate workflow. It is deliberately basic on layout — basic enough that Mimaki dealers themselves suggest pairing it with a separate layout tool for DTF gang sheet work (signwarehouse.com, 07/2026). RasterLink is the right call if you print Mimaki TxF: it’s free and supported. Budget your gang sheet building somewhere upstream of it.
Caldera Direct-to-Film — the production-floor tier
Caldera’s DTF line (Essentials/Pro/Max) runs on macOS, Windows and Linux and drives fleets, not single printers. There is no public price list; averaged deal data puts it around $5,000 a year (vendr.com, 07/2026). Caldera is the right call if you run multiple wide printers with an operator team and RIP standardisation across the floor is worth enterprise money. For a one-printer DTF shop it is the wrong end of the catalogue.
Gang sheets: what belongs in the RIP, and what doesn’t
Every RIP above can print a gang sheet; only CADlink really sells building one. That split is the honest structure of the market: the RIP’s job is colour, ink limits, white generation and the print queue. Sheet layout — packing the day’s mixed orders tight, choosing rotations, keeping gaps cutter-safe — is prepress, and it is exactly the layer where film money is won or lost before the RIP ever sees the file. White ink and spot channels: the practical compatibility question
Whatever RIP you run, the white layer arrives in one of two ways: the RIP generates it from your artwork, or your file carries it as named spot channels the RIP maps to white ink. A spot-bearing path makes the handoff structure inspectable and repeatable, but it does not make one file automatically portable across RIP products or versions.
