What your RIP’s built-in nesting is — and what NestSheet is

Every production RIP exists to do three jobs superbly: colour management, screening/pass data, and driving the printer. Most also bundle a nesting or step-and-repeat module, because sending one artwork at a time to a roll is wasteful — and for laying out a handful of finished files, that module is the right tool. Nothing on this page argues against it.

The problem is what happens when the nesting module becomes the prepress department. The RIP is the last stop before the print head: anything wrong discovered there — a missing alpha, a white channel that halos, a file that needed fixing — is discovered while media is about to feed. Prepress decisions made at the very end of the pipeline are the most expensive place to make them.

NestSheet moves those decisions upstream, into the browser, before handoff. The file that reaches your RIP is already a composed gang sheet with the white channel you previewed and channel names your RIP recognises. Your RIP then does the job it is genuinely built for.

Is NestSheet a RIP?
No. It doesn’t manage colour to the printer, doesn’t screen, doesn’t drive hardware. It prepares the gang sheet file your RIP consumes — that’s the whole job.
Do I still need my RIP?
Yes, unconditionally. NestSheet outputs TIFF, PSD/PSB with spot channels, PNG and PDF for your RIP to process; without a RIP there is no print.
Which RIPs does NestSheet ship presets for?
Six presets today: MainTOP, CadLink Digital Factory, AcroRip, PhotoPRINT, SAi Flexi and Generic DTF. For anything else, the Generic DTF preset plus renameable channel names (W1–W8 / V1–V4) covers the naming your RIP expects. No “verified with everything” claims — presets are listed when they ship.
My RIP already nests — when is adding a layer actually worth it?
Honestly: not always. If you print single artworks or small repeats of finished files, the built-in module is enough. The upstream layer starts paying when batches are mixed, white settings vary per job, client files arrive broken, or more than one person preps while the RIP workstation is busy.
