The table does not turn unlike products into one score. A free layout tool can be the correct answer when the source files are clean and the RIP owns white. A paid application is justified only when it removes a controlled production failure or makes a required handoff inspectable.

NestSheet: what changed, and what is actually shipped

The previous version of this roundup incorrectly said NestSheet lacked an artwork halftone/dithering engine and used a retired product label. The current workflow is Prep.

Prep stores a non-destructive fixed-order recipe: background removal, colour knockout, Fringe Doctor, invisible-pixel cleanup and halftone. White is a separate property regenerated for preview/export rather than another destructive colour step. The current tools include:

  • colour knockout with ΔE2000, ΔE76, RGB and HSL matching, plus tolerance and feather controls;
  • Fringe Doctor with decontaminate or remove modes for edge contamination;
  • invisible-pixel cleanup that can remove qualifying low-alpha pixels or make them visible for diagnosis;
  • ordered, AM-dot, Floyd–Steinberg and stochastic halftone methods;
  • LPI control from 20–200 using the stored density; successful files without density metadata receive a 300 PPI default, so verify intended physical size before relying on LPI;
  • 0–90° screen angle for the ordered and AM-dot methods, where an angled screen is meaningful;
  • ART, WHITE, FABRIC and DIFF views plus a print-size loupe for reviewing consequences.

Those ranges are product controls, not universal print recipes. LPI depends on source density and the physical result; edge cleanup depends on the artwork; halftone suitability depends on ink, film, powder, press and the target RIP/printer path. Test rather than copying a default.

The current Studio packs rectangular bounds with copies, gap, margin and orthogonal rotations in Auto or Manual mode. It exports downloadable TIFF, PNG, flattened PSD/PSB or flattened raster PDF. TIFF and PSD/PSB contain the current spot-bearing lanes; PNG carries colour plus alpha; the raster PDF lane has no white/varnish spots. Channel names are editable, but a NestSheet output choice is not a compatibility guarantee for every RIP version.

What is not shipped matters equally: no full retouching/design editor, no vector cut-path workflow, no true-shape contour nesting, no automatic overflow division across sheets, no hotfolder delivery and no printer driving. Dedicated UV-DTF mode remains roadmap even though supported file rows can emit varnish planes.

  1. Select a representative mixed batch, including one soft edge, one fine detail and more than one size/copy count.
  2. Fix final dimensions, copies, usable sheet bounds, gap, margin and permitted rotations before opening any candidate.
